These charming boys

Boys Life 3 Strand Releasing

Reviewed by Anthony Glassman

Cleveland-They say that the third time is the charm. Who they are, I don't know, but if the third time they're talking about is Boys Life 3, they're right.

This is the third installment of short gay films from Strand Releasing, and the series has been one of their best selling releases. The Cleveland Cinematheque will be playing the films Friday and Saturday, May 11 and 12.

There are five films in this collection, ranging from just over six minutes to just under a half-hour. They're an interesting mix, running from the absurd to the sublimely mundane.

The first short, Majorettes in Space, is a French film using stock footage, new material and animation to illustrate the tragedy and triumph of life, all the while taking pot-shots at the Pope.

David Fourier, the writer and director of the piece, draws lines connecting and separating the various people in the film, showing both humor and melancholy all the while. There's no linear plot, but it's engaging and enjoyable nonetheless.

The second film, hITCH, looks at the dynamic between two men stuck together in a VW Microbus. The driver is gay, the hitchhiker straight.

Bradley Rust Gray, hITCH's writer and director, spent part of his childhood in Ohio. The film itself, however, is a straight-up California indie film, reminiscent of Gregg Araki without the pretenses. It's an interesting tale that doesn't really go anywhere, but is fun to watch, nonetheless.

Third up is the star-power driven film of the evening, Inside Out. Jason Gould, gay son of Elliot Gould and Barbara Streisand, wrote and directed it.

Basically, it's a movie about Jason, only in the film he calls himself Aaron, presumably so he won't sue himself for libel. He talks to his friends, his father and his brother; he dates, he attends a support group for children of celebrities. One almost feels sorry for the poor little rich boy.

The star power, however, is not limited to him and his parents (although Elliot does make an appearance, as does Sam Gould, Elliot's other son-but not Mom). Alexis Arquette plays the best friend Adam, and there is an hilarious performance by character actor Jon Polito as a paparazzi who o gets more than he ever wanted.

Christina Crawford also has a fantastic cameo; according to her, she's completely gotten over the wire hanger thing.

Next up is Just One Time by Lane Janger, also starring Lane Janger, along with Guillermo Diaz, Jennifer Esposito and Joelle Carter.

It's a simple premise behind this one:

Anthony (Janger) wants, just one time, to watch his fiancée Amy (Carter) make love to another woman. She agrees, as long as he returns the favor. She then brings home Victor (Diaz) to turn the tables on her husbandto-be.

It's a cute premise, and in the 71⁄2-minute version, it hits hard and fast. The short was so

successful on the festival circuit that Janger expanded it to a full-length version, now available on video.

Finally, we come to $30, a tender comingof-age tale, if you grew up somewhere south of hell.

Scott's father gives him $30 for his birthday and sets him up with a prostitute (Sara Gilbert). Color me surprised-I really didn't think anybody did that after 1957.

Scott goes to the prostitute's room, where he is spectacularly unable to perform. She is understanding; it is his first time, after all. She also can't believe his father sent him to a hooker. Of course, having grown up with Roseanne, she realizes quickly what's up, and helps Scott turn the tables on his father.

The only problem with this short is the strange and incongruous opening and closing sequences set on a beach. I guess they're dreams, showing us that Scott can embrace them. Something like that, anyway.

In addition to playing at the Cinematheque, all of the shorts except Majorettes will be part of the Sundance Channel's "Out Loud Film Festival" in June, when the pay cable network gives itself over to the LGBT community for Pride month.

Boys Life 3 will play Friday, May 11 at 7:15 pm, and Saturday, May 12 at 7 pm. The Cinematheque is located in the Cleveland Institute of Art at 11141 East Blvd, in University Circle, and can be reached at 216421-7450.
